07/07/2010

The Galician appellation chose Madrid as the city from where to launch its new vintage

The appellation’s secretary general explaining the characteristics of the 2009 vintage.

The Chairman of DO Rías Baixas’ Regulating Council, José Ramón Meiriño, was in charge of announcing the decision from the regulating body to bestow the rating of ‘Very Good’ on the 2009 vintage. An announcement which was made in Madrid on 30th June during a working lunch with the press, followed, in the afternoon, by a showroom in which 58 of the appellation’s bodegas and more than 85 different brands were present.

The decision made by the Regulating Council sitting in plenary is the direct result of a rigorous quality policy, which demands a high level of standards, and for which both the ratings from the organisation’s Tasting Panel and the physical-chemical analysis of each sample of wine targeted for sale, were taken into account, as well as the criteria set out by the appellation’s Control and Certification Body. The analysis was carried out on samples representing the more than 6.5 million litres endorsed up to and including 30th April, which represents more than 45 percent of the current vintage.

The results verify the statement that, “the 2009 Rías Baixas Albariños are very fruity, aromatic, and well structured wines, characteristics which belong to the predominate Albariño grape variety, as well as to the excellent timing of last year’s harvest”, explained the Secretary General of DO Rías Baixas’ Regulating Council, Ramón Huidobro.

In addition, and thanks to the high level of standards adhered to by the bodegas which make up the appellation, its wines have become the winners of numerous awards in some of the most prestigious domestic and international competitions. As a result, in total Rías Baixas’ wines have won over a hundred awards in contests such as the 9th Bacchus International Wine Competition 2010, the Challenge International du Vin, the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, the Vinalies Internationales 2010 in Paris, and the Decanter World Wine Awards.
